Tracey Silva Barbosa was born in 1977 in Taunton, Massachusetts to parents from the Azorean Islands of Portugal. This cultural contrast has informed and imbued her entire body of work. During college Barbosa experimented with different mediums like sculpture, glass, paint and many others. Through her studies she found her preference to be glass sculpture and mixed media. She refers to these mediums as “freeing”.
Her landscape driven paintings are a subtle and multi-layered combination of modern environments, history, and composites of her own photography which speak to the passage of time in asymmetrical narratives inspired by Asian scroll paintings. Through these diverse media and her personal symbolism, she is able to draw the viewer in with images that evoke emotion and memory.
